Rise of the Beastly Boys!!!!

For Asian female singers it’s usually style and dress appearance what separates them. The common or typical desirable Asian female star is slim(petite) with long hair and light skin.Although many argue against this image because defining a “slim body” type for a woman can be quite controversial.Unlike Americans the ideal Asian women posses the “S” shape.Similar to west for admiring women who posses the “hour-glass figure”.Either way both are similar and not every women naturally posses these type of bodies.

For men in Asian media their torso can make or break the difference. Most Asian actors and singers are usually slim to average built.Makes you wonder if there is such thing as larger people in Asia.Although a large sum of the population falls into the”‘average” category some do go above.I notice a sudden increase mostly in K-pop to have much more large men.In height and  weight size to get more attention.Labels like YG, SM,and JYP have specialize trainers and gyms to support the efforts of having better looking pop stars.Hiring special diet nutritionists to make sure their K-pop stars don’t tip the scales the wrong way. In Japan the attitude about health is important but size isn’t an issue. While groups like 2am,2pm,DBSK(some members) bulk up a little  couldn’t help but notice the different body types that are emerging.

This new reasoning for bulking up has some fans turn off and a little turn on.Is there a need for Asian male pop stars to have a 6 or 8 pack abs?Remind you these people are just performers not all-star athletes preparing for the Olympics. The labels don’t seem to care and making sure not only musical do these men make massive waves but physically have the audience craving for their chocolate abs.

Beastly Boys

Beef Cakes, beastly, solid build to big muscles these are the “adonis” of Asian pop.Male K-pop stars like Rain,2pm’s Teacyeon,Big Bang’s Tae Yang,etc.. fit in these category.Males with short torso or stocky built fit perfectly in this category also. Why,because it allows you to bulk up your body size. The ideal shape is men who have a V shape or rectangular.Meaning from the broadness of his shoulder to the narrow division of his torso and length of the waist line. Those who have V shape means their torso is narrow to waist line but shoulders are extremely broad representing  a V shape.A male with a rectangular body means their shoulder and waist line are almost the same length.Having a straight torso that is even with upper and lower body.

Lean and Mean

Like beef cakes those who are lean body can bulk but not as greatly.Mostly possessing a muscular body or semi slim athletic body but still having a much longer torso. This is a common body type for athletes who are tall with natural muscular built. Despite being tall doesn’t give them a large body frame.Like beastly boys their muscle are define greatly but still have the image of an ultra slim body. Most common to have a V shape except the torso is much longer with the waist line more define. The peaks and biceps aren’t as large but extremely muscular for a small frame.

Skinny Mini

Naturally most Asian people even men do not have extremely large body masses.Due to diet and region which can affect a person height.Slim boys are the usually norm specially when it comes to high fashion.Still posses a minor athletic body to very small muscle mass. These guys can still have a six-pack but it isn’t always as define.Men who have rectangular bodies usually are slim built.

Average Joe

The average joe isn’t much but still consider having somewhat of an athletic built.Guys who are average fit in their weight class but not extremely muscular or to slim. The average joe is what most men fit and so do women.Having the right weight for your body frame.Without bulking up or going through hassle of defining your abdominal and biceps.

Cubby Wubby

Some people are just naturally large frame  or will always have a little more baggage on their body .Being chubby in K-pop is a sin if not extremely unattractive. The idea of someone who is over weight or has a large frame size can seem as being lazy.Lacking any natural athletic ability which is totally incorrect.Just because that person is large doesn’t mean their incapable of achieving athleticism. There is a small number of Asian artist and actors who have large frames. As fast food and technology increase this may become the common norm. There is nothing wrong with being bigger as long your health is good.Besides chubby boys make excellent cuddle buddies.

Pic of the Day

Masta Wu (left) and DM aka Digital Master? (right) part of short-lived YG duo YMGA.Show off their naughty boy side or more like their gross side.Ew, I hope they used hand sanitizer.

Masta Wu:M.I.A?

Masta WuM.I.A is term used in the military for missing in action so don’t mistaken it always as female rap artist MIA.Some of us remember who  Masta Wu is note he is not from the Wu Tang Clan but an underground rapper from Korean label YG Entertainment.Though Wu is part of the major label company that doesn’t mean he was trying to make a big name out of himself but more of an impact.Leaving his stamp for all to see and admire for years to come.Once rumor to have beef with Korea’s greatest MC  Tiger JC of Drunken Tiger it seem Wu is keeping a low profile. So what happen to Masta Wu?Did he fall off a cliff?Had some money problems and stayed low?Did he had some baby’s mama drama who couldn’t ignore?Okay that last one was kinda ridiculous but seriously what happen to him?

MastaWuThe story of Wu isn’t a well known one but one can assume he most likely develop a love for hip hop as a young teenager.Study the master flows of American MCs like Snoop Dog,Method Man, and several others.Had a dream,as he age and created his own signature flow went out looking for a label.Under same company that found future band members of 1tym’s Danny and Teddy Brothers Entertainment.

wufroOne look at Wu you could mistake him for someone who is African/Asian heritage mix sporting an afro that maybe was a wig.Maybe Wu was just a proud Afro Asian ways paying respects to his more deeper roots.Wu style is very hip hop which caught the eye of YG Entertainment.

Wu would soon be part of the major label and making appearances under YG Family pet name for YG Entertainment.Appearing on songs like “Fly Gentlemen” and “YMCA” having this smooth laid back flow compare to other YG Family members.Although he has his own solo songs like “Bad Boy” , “Everything All Rite” and teaming up with Se7en for “White“. Masta Wu showed off his true gangster flow and style in “Don’t Stop.” Reminds you of Lil Kim’s “Crush On You” but not having similar sound. Many music critics claim Wu was to Americanize but if your like me you just don’t understand why that might be a bad thing.Hip hop is a genre pioneer in US that is mostly African American male dominated.Maybe those critics should do some damn homework and learn the roots of hip hop.

Masta Wu

While Wu was blazing as a soloist he decide to be part of duo with Digital Master(DM) form YMGA(Young Man’s Gangster Association). The group debut with a cover song of 1987 hit done by Taylor Dayne “Tell If To My Heart.”Turning the pop song into a Korean hip hop song with actress turn singer Uhm Jung Hwa for the female vocals. Though many argue that YMGA wasn’t being so original and recycling from Jinusean.Another hip hop duo under YG label who came to be way before YMGA.Regardless the negativity “Tell It To My Heart” YMGA version became a hit.

MastaWu2The duo release their album Made In R.O.K(Republic of Korea) and began  promotions. Also becoming pretty faces getting a modeling gig for Korean hip hop T-Shirt clothing line Colonize.Along with other fan favorites “Scandal”featuring Taebin(Danny 1tym) and “What.”That features a slew of YG artists from Teddy(1tym),G-Dragon(Big Bang) and up in coming 2NE1 member CL.Seem YMGA was getting successful then the hype died down.YG refocus their energy on Big Bang debut in Japan and production work on 2NE1.YMGA along with other YG veterans took a back seat while the younger YG artists were given the opportunity to rise.

MastaWu3Where is Masta Wu nowadays and is he still part of YMGA?My guess that is a yes but he is keeping to himself. You can find the Korean rapper MySpace page but he seem un active at the moment. Most likely enjoying what he has now before returning back into competitive world of Korean pop music. The year of 09 is the year of rookie bands with mostly a pop sound.South Korea could use a good helping of hip hop from artists who truly, breathes its, live it and respect the game.

The “N” Word

Ignorance is Contagious.

Finding old tracks from 1tym I stumble across “Ready or Not Yo” Feat.Jinu from Jinusean and fellow 1tym members Teddy and Danny. The rap is clearly in English and both Teddy and Danny are raised in America.Well aware of hip hop and how it can truly have a double standard. Despite their acknowledge both so called hip hop artist display an act of ignorance. Teddy this isn’t his first time to drop “nigga” in a song. Masta Wu “Do or Die” both artist drop the word “Nigga.”I don’t agree with this what so ever when Black hip hop artist from states use this term.

Anytime someone who isn’t Black and use this term usually gets their asses beat down. The irony is Teddy,Danny, and Masta Wu all three are raised in US but Korean native rappers do not use this word. Using harsh language never bother me but using racial slurs seem foolish. Many can agree that “nigga” no matter who is saying it is never the appropriate regardless if your hip hop artist or an everyday joe. Most hip hop today only feed stereotypes that haunt African Americans. We are not niggas nor thugs but a community of people that live to thrive not just to survive. Those of US are aware of the achievements that Black civil leaders have created for future generation. Only to be destroy by youth who refuse to learn their roots.

I don’t understand why so many hip hop artist want to create this negative bravado of being thugs or wannabe thugs.Maybe it comes from days of early hip hop in 90’s (around the time) were Teddy and Danny would have been most influence. Hearing big time hip hop artist like Notorious BIG and 2pac saying nigga meaning to friends, family, enemies and fellow thugs or gang members. This coming from American culture verse South Korean culture were nigga can really mean nigger turning into a racial slur that many would not understand. If I was a fan in South Korea that has never really been expose to African or African American people but via TV or music this could seem misguiding. Giving the “OK” to say nigga in real life would make them seem like an ignorant racist.

Korean hip hop artist are not only feeding racial stereotypes and being irresponsible. Taking advantage of nation of people.I understand that Korean hip hop artist want to seem cool and usher in the hip hop trend but be respectful and mindful. Just because Jay-z and Lil Wayne say “nigga” in their songs does not give you the same privilege nor the right.Be more social responsible and promote a more positive image in hip hop. Doesn’t mean you have to be kid friendly but Beastie Boys, Run DMC and other hip hop artist understand you don’t have to throw in “nigga” to make a point or statement.
